Need to rationalise petroleum prices, says PM

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday said India needs to rationalize the prices of petroleum products for insulating the common people of their effects.
Dedicating the Rs. 20,000 crore Guru Gobind Singh-Refinery, he said, with imports accounting for approximately 80% of the raw supplies, the spiraling prices of crude in the international markets put a serious strain on the import bill.
"We need to rationalize prices and at the same time ensure that the poor and needy are protected from the effects of such reasoning," he said.
State oil companies do not lifted diesel, domestic LPG and kerosene for almost a year in spite of the cost of raw materials rising by a quarter.
The Prime Minister said, to isolate the common people of the impact of rising oil, the government strongly a considerable part of the burden of pricing diesel, kerosene and domestic LPG below their market price.
"The challenges we confront the energy front is formidable. We need an adequate supply of energy at affordable prices. Domestic sources of crude oil and natural gas are inadequate to meet the growing demands of our rapidly expanding economy," Singh said.
The government had in June 2010 released gasoline prices of their control but PSU oil companies could not raise prices because of political pressure. Gasoline price of Rs. 65.64 a liter in Delhi is Rs. 9 short of its cost.
The government controls rates of diesel, domestic LPG and kerosene. Oil companies to sell diesel at a discount of Rs. 16.16 a liter, while they are losing Rs. 32.59 on sale from every liter of kerosene. A 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder, costs Rs. 570.50 less than its actual cost.
Indian Oil Corp, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum lost about Rs. 138,800 crore in revenues in selling diesel, domestic LPG and kerosene below cost in 2011-12. This fiscal, the revenue loss is estimated at Rs. 208,000 crore.

Non-core income, dividends drive ICICI Bank net up 31% in Q4

ICICI Bank today reported 31 per cent jump in net profit to Rs 1,902 crore for the fourth quarter of 2011-12, driven by rise in both interest and non-interest income, and higher dividends from subsidiaries.

Non-core revenue, which includes gains from treasury and fees in addition to higher dividends from subsidiaries, rose almost 36 per cent to Rs 2,230 crore, while the core network interest income grew 24 per cent to Rs 3,105 crore during the quarter, the country's largest private lender said today.

The bank had posted a profit of Rs 1.452 crore in January-March quarter of the previous fiscal.

Total income increased to Rs 11,403 crore in the quarter under review

from Rs 8,797 crore in the year-ago period.

"Strong loan growth and other revenue, which includes a dividend of our subsidiaries, as well as a good asset quality has helped us to report strong numbers," ICICI Bank managing director and chief executive Chanda told reporters in a conference call here.

"This could also help us offset the impact of Rs 613 crore loss in ICICI Lombard for the IrDA guidelines on third-party motor insurance pool," she said.

Dividend income rose to Rs 280 crore in the reporting period against Rs 75 crore a year.

Market cheered the numbers, jacking the ICICI counter of almost 4 per cent intra-day and closing at Rs 860.75 up 2.3 per cent in the BSE despite a flat market.

On the back of better-than-expected numbers, Kochhar sounded bullish about growth in the current fiscal saying the bank will grow above the industry average at 20 percent.

The Reserve Bank has fixed 17 per cent increase in advance for the tax.

EPF interest rate will be raised to 8.6% this year: Government

New Delhi: Interest rate on employees provident fund will be increased to 8.6 per cent for the current fiscal, a move that will benefit about five crore subscribers. "The taxes were dropped because of low incomes (on investment in special tank schemes) ... There is no question of a minimum or maximum interest rates. We distribute it according to our income. Next time, it will be 8.6 percent," labor minister Mallikarjun Kharge said in the Rajya Sabha replying to a debate on the working of the labor ministry.

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) brought down the rate of interest at 8.25 percent for 2011-12 from 9.5 per cent provided in 2010-11. The retirement fund body EPFO has already parked in excess of Rs 55,000 crore in the special deposit scheme (SDS) aimed at providing better returns to non-government provident funds and other such funds.

Kharge said the rate of interest on the funds depends on the income. Since the money belongs to workers, the government does not intend to reap any benefit from the fund and returns every penny for the welfare of the subscribers.

"Even if the interest is less, the money is kept in safe custody," Kharge said. The interest was reduced last fiscal on the finance ministry's recommendation that with such a return, it could not continue with the 9.5 percent given in the year-ago period. Affirming that his ministry takes pro-active steps to address issues related to work, Kharge said, the government passed laws to protect workers and provide them additional benefits as a secured job, food and medicines. On pending bills, he said, "Once upon a time, we can not proclaim good laws due to differences. Without cooperation, no decision can be taken."
